Socket Preservation

“The moment a tooth is removed, bone loss begins — socket preservation stops that process and keeps your options open for the future.”

What Is Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation — also called ridge preservation — is a bone grafting procedure performed immediately after a tooth extraction to minimize the bone loss that naturally occurs when a tooth is removed. By filling the empty socket with bone graft material at the time of extraction, the procedure maintains the volume and shape of the ridge for future implant placement or other restorations.

Why Does Bone Loss Occur After Extraction?

The jawbone exists to support tooth roots. When a root is removed, the bone no longer receives the stimulation it needs and begins to resorb (dissolve) significantly in the first 3 months, with continued progressive resorption. This bone loss is permanent — once lost, it must be rebuilt with a more complex and costly grafting procedure before implants can be placed.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

During the Same Appointment as Extraction

  1. Tooth extracted atraumatically (minimizing bone trauma)

  2. Socket thoroughly cleaned and examined

  3. Bone graft material placed to fill the socket

  4. Collagen membrane placed over the socket opening to contain the graft

  5. Membrane secured — may be sutured or left to dissolve naturally

  6. Adds approximately 15–20 minutes to the extraction appointment

Healing Period

  • 3 to 4 months for graft material to be replaced by your own bone

  • Follow-up X-ray or CBCT scan to assess bone volume before implant placement

  • Temporary restoration options available during healing period

Who Should Consider Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation is recommended for virtually any patient having a tooth extracted without active infection who:

  • Is considering a dental implant in the future

  • Wants to maintain a bridge with a natural-looking pontic site

  • Is concerned about facial appearance and ridge collapse

  • Wants to keep future options open even if not yet decided on replacement

Socket preservation may not be recommended when a tooth is extracted with active infection, or if immediate implant placement is planned (implant placed the same day as extraction).

Will It Affect My Recovery?

Socket preservation does not significantly change the extraction recovery experience:

  • Similar post-operative instructions to a standard extraction

  • Mild additional soreness possible — managed with standard pain medication

  • The membrane may be visible at the surface initially — this is normal

  • Follow all post-operative instructions carefully to protect the graft

A small investment at the time of extraction protects a much larger investment in the future.
