Gum Recession Management

“Receding gums expose sensitive root surfaces and put your teeth at risk — early management can halt progression and protect your long-term oral health.”

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding a tooth pulls back or wears away, exposing more of the tooth and its root. This not only affects the appearance of your smile but also increases sensitivity, raises cavity risk on exposed roots, and — if left untreated — can lead to tooth loss.

How Do I Know If My Gums Are Receding?

  • Teeth appear longer than before

  • Increased sensitivity to cold, heat, or sweet foods

  • A visible notch or groove near the gumline

  • Roots that feel rough to the tongue

  • Gum tenderness along the affected teeth

What Causes Gum Recession?

Cause Detail

Periodontal disease Most common cause — bacterial destruction of gum and bone‍ ‍

Aggressive brushing Hard bristles or heavy pressure erodes gum tissue

Genetics Thin gum tissue type runs in families

Teeth grinding (bruxism) Excessive force accelerates recession

Bite misalignment Uneven pressure on certain teeth

Tobacco use Reduces blood supply to gum tissue

Orthodontic movement Teeth moved outside the bone envelope

How Is Gum Recession Managed at Remcon Prime Dental?

Step 1 — Evaluation

Dr. Kim measures recession depth, probing depths, and bone levels to determine the cause and severity.

Step 2 — Address the Underlying Cause

  • If gum disease is present → Scaling & Root Planing first

  • If brushing technique is the cause → modified home care instructions

  • If bruxism is contributing → custom night guard

Step 3 — Conservative Management

For mild to moderate recession:

  • Desensitizing agents to relieve sensitivity

  • Modified brushing technique with soft-bristle brush

  • Close monitoring at perio maintenance intervals

  • Protective bonding over exposed root surfaces if needed

Step 4 — Referral for Surgical Correction (if needed)

For significant recession requiring tissue grafting, Dr. Kim will refer you to a trusted periodontist for a connective tissue graft or similar procedure, then coordinate your restorative care after healing.
