Dental Sealant
“A thin protective coating that shields the grooves of your back teeth — one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities.”
What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These surfaces have deep pits and grooves where food particles and bacteria easily accumulate — even with careful brushing. Sealants seal off these vulnerable areas, dramatically reducing the risk of decay.
Who Should Get Sealants?
Children ages 6–14 — as soon as permanent molars come in
Adults with deep grooves and no existing decay or fillings in those teeth
Patients at higher risk for cavities
How Are Sealants Applied?
The procedure is simple, painless, and completed in one visit:
The tooth is cleaned and dried
A mild acid solution is applied to roughen the surface (helps bonding)
The sealant material is painted onto the tooth
A special curing light hardens the sealant in seconds
Dr. Kim checks your bite and makes any adjustments
Total time: approximately 5–10 minutes per tooth
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can protect teeth for 5 to 10 years with proper care. Dr. Kim checks them at every routine visit and reapplies them if needed.
Are Sealants Covered by Insurance?
Many insurance plans cover sealants for children under age 18. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment and clearly explain any out-of-pocket costs.
